Also if this is for news, are you going to be doing any NLP on plaintext to find trending topics/ngrams (not just hashtags)?
Natural Language Processing, ML technique to ensure that you could pull out concepts rather than just single words from your database, that would be a way that you could have more intelligent trending topics if you chose to go down that route.
